In the eastern part of the city of Ragusa there is its oldest neighborhood. Ragusa Ibla from 1866 to 1927 was an autonomous Italian municipality with the name of Lower Ragusa, and only later, with the elevation of Ragusa to the provincial capital were the two municipalities united. It is currently the oldest district in the historic center of Ragusa, also called only Ibla or, in the Ragusa dialect, Iusu, or the lower Ragusa, to distinguish it from the upper one and is located on a hill that goes from 380 to 440 m above sea level.
With the reconstruction following the earthquake of 1693, all of ancient Ragusa was rebuilt producing works, buildings and monuments in the late Baroque style. The ancient city contains over fifty churches and many Baroque buildings, there are as many as 14 monuments registered in the World Heritage Site, also in the eastern part we find the Giardino Ibleo where there are visible archaeological excavations attributable to an ancient city identifiable with the Hybla Heraia. The most imposing building in this beautiful village is the Cathedral of San Giorgio. Piazza Pola in Ragusa Ibla is the main neighborhood and it is here that there are numerous bars, clubs and municipal offices and it is connected to Piazza Duomo by Corso XXV Aprile, here we can admire the Church of San Giuseppe.
In the evening, Ragusa Ibla turns into a real nativity scene, the alleys and houses are a unique spectacle of its kind and you can admire spending pleasant moments of leisure and relaxation. Craft shops, trattorias, ice cream parlors and restaurants make the atmosphere of the city warm and welcoming Precisely because of the small access roads, the entrance to the historic center of Ibla is allowed only to residents' vehicles, but you can leave your car in the adjacent parking lots.
