Noto is also called the "Capital of the Baroque" declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, together with the Val di Noto. After the earthquake of 1693, in which Noto was completely destroyed and rebuilt using the limpid local limestone, the greatest artists and architects of Sicily of the time were asked to plan this reconstruction. Crossing the Porta Reale, in Corso Vittorio Emanuele, you can admire the wonders of this beautiful city.
The church of Santa Chiara completed in 1758 is one of the most important examples of Sicilian Baroque and is annexed to the Convent of the Benedictine Sisters which today houses the Civic Museum of Noto. The symbol of Noto is the Cathedral of San Nicolò in sandstone, with its two towers it has a large staircase. Inside you can admire important works of art from Noto Antica. Bordered on one side by the majestic staircase of the Cathedral and on the other side by Palazzo Ducezio with the Sala degli Specchi inside there is the elegant Piazza del Municipio.
One of the most beautiful hard buildings in this wonderful city is Palazzo Nicolaci, always in Baroque Style, part of it houses the municipal library. In the beautiful Piazza dell'Immacolata we have the Church of San Francesco all'Immacolata and on the left the Monastery of the Santissimo Salvatore. Dating back to 1730 we have the Church of San Carlo al Corso dedicated to San Carlo Borromeo with its three naves, the view from the bell tower is breathtaking. In Piazza XVI Maggio there is the beautiful Villetta d'Ercole from which you can see the Vittorio Emanuele Theater and the facade of the Church of San Domenico, an important example of the Baroque of Noto. Near the Cathedral is the Landolina Palace dating back to 1730 which houses the Diocesan Museum of Noto.
